STOP, LOOK, LISTEN TO… WILL DOWNING – THE COMEBACK KID

In 2007, there was a fear that we may have lost Will Downing from the music business.  Rumors were flying that his singing days were over because of a disease he contracted that prevented him from performing… and possibly even prevented him from recording.  It’s difficult to do either when you’re in severe pain losing your ability to move.  Turns out, Will had an illness called Polymyositis.  This debilitating disease is an inflammatory disorder in which muscle tissues become inflamed and deteriorate, causing weakness and painWill Downing lost lots of weight and was forced into a wheelchair for mobility.  But somehow, this strong, determined young man from Brooklyn, New York has bounced back from this devastating set-back.  In fact, he didn’t let it stop him as he was going through its worst symptoms.  It’s been said that Will went through the painful difficulty of recording from his wheelchair and sometimes from the bed in order to put the album, After Tonight, out before 2007 even ended.  Not only did he put out the album, he released a great album full of amazingly sensual and romantic Jazzy Soul songs like only Will Downing can.  He’s released three albums and 3 shorty EP’s (4 songs per disc) since then and seems to be back… in full forceTHE COMEBACK KID; and we’re all the better for it.  Thank God we still get to experience more Will Downing love songs and his Sophisticated Soul approach to classics like, “I Try,” “I Go Crazy,” “The World Is A Ghetto,” “Wishing On A Star,” “Send For Me,” “Free” and “STOP, LOOK, LISTEN TO YOUR HEART.”  Who can forget or ever get enough of Will’s two duet classics, “Nothing Has Ever Felt Like This,” with Rachelle Ferrell and his re-make of the Bonnie Raitt smoker, “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” which he sang with Marva KingBonnie Raitt didn’t write the song but it originated with her.  The song is so hauntingly beautiful that whoever sings it, JAMS it… like Tank’s more recent version, for example… but Will’s version is still my favorite with everybody else right on his heels; again… great, great song!  Will’s not scared of songs that originate in Soprano or Falsetto Tenor voices; he brings a song to its knees with his unique velvety Baritone delivery.  Thank you, brotha, for the music and all the memories that go with it.  I found YOUTUBE videos of Will with AND without hair, spanning years of his career in live performance and on music videos.  I’m gonna step aside and let you celebrate the longevity of this singer’s artistry with me… let’s STOP, LOOK, LISTEN TO… WILL DOWNING – THE COMEBACK KID.  Enjoy!
