CHRISETTE & FANTASIA STRIKE GOLD SINGING OVER OLD SCHOOL TRACKS

Now normally I would prefer that today’s young recording artists NOT use AUTO TUNES and NOT sing over SAMPLED MUSIC TRACKS… that’s normally.  There are always EXCEPTIONS to any rule, even when you’re making up the rules of your own personal preferences.  Chrisette Michele and Fantasia both sing over practically intact music tracks from songs by the O’Jays and the Commodores respectively and I DIG ‘EM!  Why did these songs win me over after breakin’ my music preference rule?  Well, first… their new songs and melodies fit perfectly with the classic music tracks.  Secondly, both these chill’uns are sangin’ their faces off!  What can I say… I’m a born sucka’ for sung-off-faces.  I could’ve presented both these song in the THIS FROM THAT article that’s a side-by-side comparison of contemporary songs that use SAMPLED music to the original song the SAMPLE came from.  Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish where the sampled music came from even though you know it sounds very familiar.  Often they lift such an obscure and random section of a popular old song that, standing alone all by itself, you just can’t put your finger on where you heard that music before.  But sometimes the SAMPLE can be straight up blatantly obviousAngie Stone had a HIT with her song, “I Wish I Didn’t Miss You.”  Angie’s vocals were placed over the very distinguishable beginning of the O’Jays’ “Back Stabbers” music track.  As much as I loved what songwriter Andrea Martin did lyrically, I wasn’t completely won over by this song because I couldn’t get past my question of, “Why didn’t they set these great vocals and lyrics over an original music track?”  Yeah, the song grew on me over time but it still didn’t win me over completely due to generation gap issues.  I’ve always considered it CORNY to just pull a track and lay it down with very little change from the original… and sing a NEW song on top of that OLD track… that is, until NOW.  These two young’uns have my full attention and I can’t hear these songs enough.  I know the GENERATION X readers agree but you BABY BOOMERS will also agree, if you don’t already, by just givin’ these two AMAZING songs a listen.  So, ‘nuff said… let’s sit back and enjoy CHRISETTE MICHELE, tearin’ it up over the SAMPLE from the O’Jays’ “Stairway To Heaven,” with her HIT, “A COUPLE OF FOREVERS” and FANTASIA killin’ it over the SAMPLE from the Commodores’, “Night Shift,” with her HIT, “LOSE TO WIN.”  Check out the Music Videos for these two slammers.  Peace!
